Microsoft has updated the Active Directory Migration Tool and also provided new guidance resources at the end of the past week. The Active Directory Migration Tool version 3.2 is now available for download from the Redmond company, accompanied by the Active Directory Migration Tool (ADMT): Migrating and Restructuring Active Directory Domains. Both can be grabbed through the Microsoft Download Center. Customers already familiar with the Active Directory Migration Tool version 3.2 (ADMT v3.2) know that Microsoft is offering an integrated toolset designed to streamline the migration process as well as any restructuring tasks in an Active Directory Domain Services infrastructure. In this regard, the Active Directory Migration Tool Guide comes to complement the ADMT 3.2 download by offering guidance for customers looking to leverage the Active Directory Migration Tool.

I'm trying to copy users from Domain A to Domain B. Both are Windows 2003 Server I installed ADMT 3.0 on Domain B. In the wizard I choose the source.

“You can use the Active Directory Migration Tool (ADMT) to perform object migrations and security translation as necessary so that users can maintain access to network resources during the migration process,” Microsoft informed. Companies looking to restructure their Active Directory Domain Services infrastructure can leverage the guide with both ADMT 3.1 and ADMT 3.2.

Microsoft provided two reasons why companies might be looking to restructure their environments, concomitantly with the deployment of the Active Directory service or Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS). In this regard, companies might decide that the logical Active Directory structure elements could be optimized, or that restructuring is necessary because of a business merger. “Restructuring involves the migration of resources between Active Directory domains in either the same forest or in different forests. After you deploy Active Directory or AD DS, you might decide to further reduce the complexity of your environment by either restructuring domains between forests or restructuring domains within a single forest,” Microsoft added. Active Directory Migration Tool (ADMT) 3.2 is available for download.

The Active Directory Migration Tool provides an integrated tool set to facilitate migration and restructuring tasks in an Active Directory infrastructure. The Active Directory Migration Tool simplifies the process of restructuring your operating environment to meet the needs of your organization. You can use ADMT to migrate users, groups, and computers from Microsoft® Windows NT® 4.0 domains to Active Directory® directory service domains; between Active Directory domains in different forests (interforest migration); and between Active Directory domains in the same forest (intraforest migration). ADMT also performs security translation from Windows NT 4.0 domains to Active Directory domains and between Active Directory domains in different forests.
