The Strand Theatre stands today as one of the 10 longest-operating movie theatres in the United States as well as one to the few remaining independent movie theatres showing first-run films. The theatre attracts 75,000 patrons annually and operates 364 days of the year. But Vallone said the Strand’s barbecue-inspired menu, live music and sprawling, rustic space will attract patrons from other boroughs. The Strand, the site of a former Blockbuster video store, opened on Nov. It is on Broadway, between Crescent and 29th Sts.
Eric Milley, executive chef of the 210-seat restaurant, said the Strand has already made strides to accommodate its neighbors. “We close by 11 o’clock every night,” said Milley, who lives in Astoria. “We’ve cut down the music volume of the bands.”. And the house-made pastrami typically sells out quickly, he said. “It’s really a casual, neighborhood, fun, friendly place to come out and hang out and listen to live music,” Milley said.
But members of the Crescent Tenants Association said they are worried about the noise. Lysa James, president of the group, which represents 110 Crescent House co-op owners bordering the garden, said the Strand should enclose the garden so voices don’t travel. “The board is concerned about the noise come summer,” she said. “If you have a lot of people out there it could be very noisy.” Luis Martins, 40, who lives in the Crescent House, said many of his neighbors are upset about the new neighborhood hot spot. “Patrons are all over the backyard smoking and drinking,” he said. “They’re smoking right below our bedrooms basically.” Martins said he is also concerned that food and supplies are often shuttled from a bakery to the Strand late at night through the backyard. The restaurant owners also run two Bakeway NYC locations in Astoria.
Kim Corum, 28, who lives in Astoria but not near the restaurant, said she was very excited that the Strand opened. “The food’s good,” said Corum, who grew up in the South. “The vibe of this place is different from some of the other bars in the area. It’s more hip.”.
