Can to obey the laws, there will be people outside talking, laughing and smoking and that’s a nuisance,” said City Councilman Peter Vallone Jr. (D-Astoria), who has already received complaints from locals.

But Vallone said the Strand’s barbecue-inspired menu, live music and sprawling, rustic space will attract patrons from other boroughs. The Strand, the site of a former Blockbuster video store, opened on Nov. It is on Broadway, between Crescent and 29th Sts.

Eric Milley, executive chef of the 210-seat restaurant, said the Strand has already made strides to accommodate its neighbors. “We close by 11 o’clock every night,” said Milley, who lives in Astoria. “We’ve cut down the music volume of the bands.”. The Strand, which is outfitted with long, wooden tables and barrels of whiskey, strives to serve as much local fare and beer as possible, Milley said. He shied away from calling it a barbecue joint as it doesn’t have a full-time wood-burning pit, though the food is modelled after different styles of barbecue from the south. “All of the meats are dry-rubbed,” he said. “There’s no mopping of sauces on the meats as they cook.” The menu, chock full of pulled pork, macaroni and cheese and babyback ribs, changes daily.

And the house-made pastrami typically sells out quickly, he said. “It’s really a casual, neighborhood, fun, friendly place to come out and hang out and listen to live music,” Milley said.

But members of the Crescent Tenants Association said they are worried about the noise. Lysa James, president of the group, which represents 110 Crescent House co-op owners bordering the garden, said the Strand should enclose the garden so voices don’t travel. “The board is concerned about the noise come summer,” she said. “If you have a lot of people out there it could be very noisy.” Luis Martins, 40, who lives in the Crescent House, said many of his neighbors are upset about the new neighborhood hot spot. “Patrons are all over the backyard smoking and drinking,” he said. “They’re smoking right below our bedrooms basically.” Martins said he is also concerned that food and supplies are often shuttled from a bakery to the Strand late at night through the backyard. The restaurant owners also run two Bakeway NYC locations in Astoria.

Kim Corum, 28, who lives in Astoria but not near the restaurant, said she was very excited that the Strand opened. “The food’s good,” said Corum, who grew up in the South. “The vibe of this place is different from some of the other bars in the area. It’s more hip.”.
